Only at the Miramar… Celebrate 100 Years at the Iconic Fairmont Miramar.

The Miramar Hotel celebrates 100 years of glamorous history and groundbreaking style this year. The Miramar literally put Santa Monica on the map when it opened as a hotel in 1921. Originally built in 1875, the Miramar Mansion was home to Georgina Jones, the forward-thinking free-spirited socialite and green thumb, who planted our landmark Moreton Bay Fig Tree, and other lush greenery in our gardens. Read a timeline of the past 100 years here.

One of our first guests was a young Greta Garbo, who moved in for an extended stay while launching her career in Hollywood. We’ve hosted more than our share of artists, writers and world leaders since then, from Mark Twain to President John F. Kennedy to Marilyn Monroe, who checked into a secluded bungalow to escape the Hollywood paparazzi! Betty Grable was discovered singing in our hotel bar, Cary Grant and Doris Day filmed That Touch of Mink in our pool. And if the walls could talk, they’d surely be buzzing about Faye Dunaway, Jane Fonda, Joni Mitchell, Oliver Stone, Sir Anthony Hopkins and other frequent guests. But they can’t–and we won’t!

In honor of our Centennial, we’ve been busy creating a unique calendar of exclusive events, designing fabulous new hotspots and hideaways, launching special pop-ups, surprise offerings and giveaways. Soko Sushi is a recent popup helmed by master sushi chef, Masa Shimakawa. The newly redesigned Lobby Lounge, signature FIG Restaurant and The Bungalow Bar will feature memorable Centennial cocktails; and special summer screenings shown at our Poolside Cinema Lounge.

Coming early 2022 is Georgina’s, our intimate new oceanfront bar, inspired by the formidable Jones, who hosted legendary literary salons for the intelligentsia of her day. Georgina’s will be home to “Spectacle,” a photo gallery and revolving program of live readings and book signings.

100 Years of Miramar – Limited Edition Centennial Posters

To honor our 100th anniversary, we’ve commissioned a set of two limited-edition silk-screen printed posters, because who doesn’t love a collectible? We are excited to be working with Studio Number One, the iconic agency founded by artist and activist Shepard Fairey.

“From its storied history and Hollywood glamour, the Miramar is a timeless icon,” said Studio Number One Founder & Creative Director Shepard Fairey. “When my team was approached to commemorate the hotel’s centennial year, we were inspired to create one-of-a-kind collectible posters that capture the iconic property’s many past lives with a nod to the elegance and sentimentality of a treasured 1950’s travel postcard – a cherished keepsake, then, and now.”

The Centennial Posters are available for sale to locals and guests during the month of December, who hold a special place in their hearts for the Miramar. A portion of the proceeds, in partnership with Liberty Hill Foundation, will help fund grassroots organizations that empower youth through the arts and other community-based services focused on youth development.
